This week we have my long awaited Stoker from South Korea's Park Chan-wook, while the rest of you can go and get your eyes checked with Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful.
Let's see what's coming out this week.

Director: Sam RaimiOz The Great and Powerful
Cast: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff
Running Time: 2 Hours 10 Minutes
Language:: English
Classification: 18
Synopsis: Disney's fantastical adventure, "Oz The Great and Powerful" directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot with fame and fortune being his for the taking, that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced that he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it's too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
Trailer Impression: I'm a little surprised that this isn't released in the summer months, because it has all the workings of it; you have a very sellable director, three sexy actresses to attract the male audience, one man to rule all the women, and all the CG that secretly stands for cash grab so that another modern take of a classic children's tale (or spinoff) could enter into the movie's billionaire club (see: Alice in Wonderland, whose Alice is starring in Stoker). But I guess we need a little taste of the summer, and since it has mostly been reserved for post-apocalyptic movies, there just isn't any space for the fantastic. I would see this if there isn't anything interesting coming out this week, but there is.
Director: Susanne RostockSing Your Song
Cast: Harry Belafonte
Running Time: 2 Hours
Language:: English
Classification: P13
Synopsis: Most people know the lasting legacy of Harry Belafonte, the entertainer. This film unearths his significant contribution to and his leadership in the civil rights movement in America and to social justice globally. This inspirational biographical film begins with Belafonte's birth into poverty in Harlem in 1927, and childhood years in Jamaica, sent there by his immigrant mother. Director Susanne Rostock takes the viewer through his discovery of theatre and training as an actor, as a young man and on to his career and success as a singer, as well as his true passion for social change, such as marching with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil-rights era.
Trailer Impression: Another interesting documentary to reach our screens, but again for some reason GSC has decided that all Malaysians only want to watch good documentaries like this at Pavilion.
Director: Ric Roman WaughSnitch
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal
Running Time: 2 Hours
Language:: English
Classification: P13
Synopsis: Inspired by true events chronicled in a PBS Frontline documentary, Snitch centers on a devoted father whose son faces 30 years in prison after being set up in a drug deal. The father then goes undercover for the DEA in the drug world to make a bust that will free his son.
Trailer Impression: I'm quite surprised to see Dwayne Johnson really trying to pull out his acting chops for this one, especially when he's the one running away from the gun instead of shooting it. It should be quite a refreshing direction for the actor to take, if only we wouldn't be seeing him holding the gun again down the month for G.I Joe Retaliation. Susan Sarandon is there, so this is my alternative if you don't want to to feel stupid watching Oz the Great and Powerful, but still looking for something easy on the brain.
Director: Park Chan-wookStoker
Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney
Running Time: 2 Hours
Language:: English
Classification: P13
Synopsis: After India's (Wasikowska's) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.
Trailer Impression: It's not hard to be excited for Park Chon-wook's Hollywood/English debut since I've watched Oldboy. The trailer here seems to have shown that his sharp (as a pointed scissor) visual style have survived the transition, and while I'm can half-expect what I'm going to see in this; part of it is not knowing what to expect.
FilmBah's Pick of the Week
Other than Stoker, another release that I was looking forward to was Niels Arden Oplev's Dead Man Down, but some hiccup must have caused its release to be delayed to tomorrow. Oh well, makes it easier to pick which movie I would be going to see tonight.Releases according to CinemaOnline.
